Educator Qualifications
Educator Qualifications
The Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) is committed to providing all of our students with the most highly qualified educators. We believe exceptional teachers are essential to student success, and we seek educators who demonstrate strong content knowledge, effective instructional practices, and a deep commitment to student needs.
Every educator with an assignment in Utah public school is required to have a Utah educator license (Utah State Code 53E-6-201). As SLCSD strives to recruit and maintain the most highly qualified educators, it is not always possible to employ an individual with the standard, full professional teaching license or professional educator license (PEL). SLCSD employes educators with the PEL, associate educator license (AEL), and LEA-specific educator license (LEA-specific), as well as associate and LEA-specific endorsements.
An explanation of the types of licenses and the percentages of licenses by district and school is available on the Utah State Board of Education’s website here: USBE Educator Qualifications and Licensing Percentages.
Individuals may also view the license status of any individual teacher or educator using the Educator Licensing Look-up Tool. Individuals interested in learning more about the district’s alternate pathway to professional educator licensing (APPEL) will find a summary of that program here: SLCSD Educator Licensing and APPEL.
As we strive to recruit and maintain the most highly qualified educators, we are committed to educational excellence and integrity for each school community. If the information you seek is unavailable from the provided links, please contact the SLCSD Human Resource Services Office.
